A difficult task soon became impossible when Buxton effectively lost two of their six riders in a heat one pile up involving their guests Chris Widman and Layne Cupitt.

Cupitt had begun promisingly and for three laps was holding second place when the tricky third bend at Brandon proved too much and he was collected by Widman. Both riders did severe damage to their machines which curtailed evening’s work – Cupitt also suffered bruising in the process.

The result was never in doubt following that incident as Coventry’s overall strength in depth proved pivotal and that coupled with a 15 point lead from the first leg made this more than comfortable for the home side.

The continued form of Veteran Tony Atkin and reserve Adam Extance were again bright spots in another difficult night for the Hitmen ‘ I’m enjoying my speedway this year and the bikes are going well – I particularly enjoyed the victory in heat 15’ commented Atkin. Meanwhile Extance confided ‘I hadn’t even started that bike for 8 months until this week but when my number 1 bike caught fire in the workshop I had no choice but to go with it and I’m glad I did!, I’m so pleased with 12+1 and the extra rides did me good’

The home side now face a two-legged semi-final against League leaders Cradley whilst Buxton have a home NL meeting with Devon to look forward to on Sunday 3rd August (3.00pm)
