BUXTON’S National League KO Cup hopes ended with a 36-54 defeat to Belle Vue at Hi-Edge on Sunday.

The Colts were always favourites to progress following their 26-point victory in Friday’s first leg, and they made it a double with a strong performance in the return fixture.

The Hitmen weren’t helped by the absence of David Wallinger, who was unable to take his place following his crash at the National Speedway Stadium, causing the home side to use the rider-replacement facility.

But that only gleaned the hosts four points, whereas a fully-fit Wallinger could have been expected to contribute at least double that total.

The early stages of the meeting proved to be a close contest, albeit the Hitmen were unable to make any inroads into the aggregate deficit.

Five of the first six heats were shared but a Colts maximum from Joe Lawlor and Kyle Bickley put them ahead in Heat 3 – and it was the start of an impressive display for Lawlor in particular.

The same combination staged a repeat performance in Heat 7 but this time they were backed up by Paul Bowen and Ben Woodhull in the next, and the Colts were in control of the second leg.

Hitmen No.1 Ben Wilson reeled off wins in each of his first three rides, but a series of shared races enabled the Colts to maintain their 12-point lead on the day, and Wilson was finally defeated by his opposite number Tom Perry in Heat 13.

The final advantage was another maximum to Belle Vue in Heat 15, provided by Lawlor and Perry who got the better of Connor Coles and Tom Woolley.

The Hitmen face another tough encounter at Hi-Edge next Sunday (April 29) when powerful Birmingham visit in the National Trophy.
