BUXTON put in one of their best away performances of the season despite losing 51-39 to Coventry Bees’ in the Travel Plus National League at Paul Chapman & Sons Arena on Monday night.

The Hitmen went behind early on as they suffered two 4-2 reverses in the opening couple of races to leave themselves four points adrift for a number of heats before home rider Max Clegg took victory over Tom Woolley with Jamie Halder third for a further 4-2 in heat six leaving the Hitmen trailing 21-15 after six heats.

The Hitmen reduced it back to four points as Connor Coles took victory from Bees’ skipper Jon Armstrong with Woolley third for a Buxton 4-2, but the fightback at this point was short lived as the Bees struck with a maximum 5-1 advantage from Luke Harris and Halder over Corban Pavitt and the Bees’ gained a further 5-1 after Ben Wilson was attempting to pass Danny Phillips and fell resulting in the race being awarded a 5-1 to Coventry with Phillips taking victory from partner Luke Ruddick and Sam Woolley third Wilson being disqualified. A further 4-2 heat win for the Bees left the Hitmen trailing 37-23 after ten heats before Wilson and Lewis Whitmore gained a 4-2 for the Hitmen over Armstrong, but Buxton then suffered a further 4-2 in the following race leaving Buxton trailing 43-29 with three heats remaining.

Coventry gained a 4-2 in the following race, but the Hitmen gained a 4-2 in the penultimate heat as Corban Pavitt rode a superb race to hold Ruddick off and take the chequered flag from Ruddick and Tom Woolley third. In the final heat home skipper Armstrong exceeded the 2-minutes time allowance resulting in him being disqualified allowing James Chattin to come in and replace him. The Hitmen finished on a high with a 4-2 in the final race as Connor Coles and Tom Woolley gained a 4-2 over Phillips.

Hitmen team manager Joshua Moss commented “I’m pleased with the performance but also disappointed because we were so close to getting a point on the board tonight and it really showed how the team has come on throughout the season. We were in the meeting and pushing Coventry hard then we suffered in heats eight to ten when they gained two 5-1’s and a 4-2 and then we battled away again. All the lads rode well Connor Coles top scoring, Ben Wilson bouncing back after a nasty crash to score 10 points and Tom Woolley 9 and Corban Pavitt rode really well and it shows how he has come on this season from that start or the year and although disappointed not to get a point tonight I’m really pleased by everyone’s efforts tonight.
