STOKE 50 HITMEN 39 - MATCH REPORT

Sunday October 07, 2018
BUXTON slipped to their second defeat within the space of a few hours as Stoke beat the Hitmen 50-39 in the Travel Plus National League at Loomer Road on Sunday night.

The Hitmen and the Potters were both reduced to five riders after Corban Pavitt was ruled out along with Potter David Wallinger after their crash at Hi-Edge Raceway in the afternoon.

Buxton were 15-9 down after the opening four races before Ben Wilson and Lewis Whitmore gained a 4-2 in heat five reducing the deficit to four points before the Potters gained a further 4-2 advantages to lead 25-17 at the midway point of the meeting. Buxton fell further behind in heat nine after SCB referee Phil Griffin had to stop the race due to safety concerns when leader Joe Lawlor guesting for the Hitmen suddenly suffered an engine failure pulling off the track Lawlor’s bike burst into flames with the youngster quickly grabbing a fire extinguisher at the starting gate to put the fire out resulting in the race being awarded a 3-2 to the Potters with Adam Extance taking the win from Kieran Douglas.

The Hitmen kept battling away and gained a 4-2 in heat twelve with skipper Tom Woolley taking victory from Paul Burnett with Douglas third leaving the Hitmen trailing 39-32. Any thought of grabbing a point from the meeting though was ended as Potters skipper and former Hitmen Max Clegg took victory from Anders Rowe with Lawlor third after Ben Wilson had fallen resulting in a 5-1 reverse and handing the home side victory with the final two heats being shared.

Hitmen team manager Joshua Moss commented “The lads did well in both meetings and fought hard but again we were that one rider short as we’ve being saying all season. Connor (Coles) is a huge miss for us both home and away scoring double figures in meetings since he returned and it was a blow to lose him once again due to injury. Joe Lawlor stepped into today and did a sterling job and we’d like to thank him for his efforts. Losing Corban (Pavitt) for the latter part of our home meeting and then here at Loomer Road in the return was also a big blow as he’d scored well at home before his injury and I’m sure would have done well here tonight but I’m pleased we kept it close at Stoke and we pushed them well at home. Lewis Whitmore also rode well today and it was nice to see I get amongst the points as it was Kieran Douglas and it will most certainly help with their confidence.”
